Citizenship By Conferral
This is the most common pathway and is available to permanent residents who meet specific residency and character requirements. To qualify, you generally need to have:
- Lived in Australia for at least 4-years immediately prior to application, including at least 1-year as a permanent resident
- Not spent more than 12-months outside Australia over the 4-year period, including not more than 90 days in the 12-month period immediately prior to application
- Passed the citizenship test (if aged 18–59)
You may already be an Australian citizen if you were born in Australian and have been ordinarily resident in Australia for the first 10 years of your life or born to a New Zealand citizen parent living in Australia.
